Waarom dan toch massaal links stemmen? Omdat progressieve partijen voor veel islamitische kiezers bescherming bieden tegen mogelijke discriminatie en tegen politieke bewegingen die zij als bedreigend ervaren. Daardoor ontstaat een praktische politieke samenwerking, ondanks de fundamentele verschillen in waarden. Dit bondgenootschap is vooral strategisch, niet ideologisch. Links is daarmee een tijdelijk politiek schild. Zolang er geen grote partij bestaat die islamitische belangen en religieus-conservatieve waarden overtuigend combineert, blijft die samenwerking aantrekkelijk.
