Jeden starožitník mi kdysi řekl, že „patina času dodává hodnotu“ a může být tím, co odlišuje originál od levné kopie. Otevírám „Nedělní eseje“ Constantina Noiky, dostávám se k předmluvě nakladatele ve vydání Humanitas z roku 1992 a zjišťuji, že „pravopis byl aktualizován“. Číst Noiku mohlo znamenat procházku třicátými a čtyřicátými lety 20. století. Místo toho se touto dobou procházíme s moderními brýlemi, pohodlně usazeni v Uberu a bez obav, že se ztratíme — tedy že neporozumíme slovům tehdejší doby, která mohla být jednoduše „přeložena“ v poznámkách pod čarou. Co kdybychom vzali také dobové noviny a „aktualizovali“ je? A možná bychom mohli udělat rebranding i tehdejším reklamám, abychom své neurony nemuseli příliš namáhat, jako bychom byli v escape roomu. Proč se zastavovat tady? Mohli bychom aktualizovat také učebnice dějepisu a napsat, že Archimédes ze Syrakus byl zabit římským vojákem, zatímco počítal matematiku na svém tabletu. Základní myšlenka zůstává stejná, ne? Jen doba zmizí. A ještě něco: proč matematici „neaktualizují“ Pythagora? Mohou změnit zápis. Mohou důkaz vysvětlit jinak. Mohou dokonce vytvořit obrázek online pomocí animace, která vzniká přímo před očima žáků. Ale Pythagorova věta zůstává Pythagorovou větou. Když tedy čteme staršího autora, proč nezachovat také jazyk jeho doby — a moderní vysvětlení neumístit do poznámek?
