Za czterotygodniowy pobyt i szkolenie dla dwóch psów zapłacili 10 tysięcy dolarów, a już po 48 godzinach dostali telefon, że Dunkin został zabrany do parku podczas fali upałów, dostał udaru cieplnego i zmarł w drodze do innego, niezapowiadanego wcześniej ośrodka. Do zdarzenia nie wezwano lekarza weterynarii, a AirTagi psów w trakcie tej przejażdżki nagle przestały nadawać sygnał. Sprawa szybko przybrała skalę większego skandalu, bo do White i Fedyka zaczęły się zgłaszać kolejne rodziny - twórca powiedział, że rozmawiał już z siedmioma innymi właścicielami, których psy zginęły w „niewyjaśnionych okolicznościach" w tym samym ośrodku. Podkreślono również kluczową kwestię prawną: do odpowiedzialności za pochwalanie przestępstwa nie jest wymagane prawomocne skazanie samego sprawcy czynu głównego.
