Dans ces conditions, il apparaît de plus en plus probable qu'un épisode majeur de Heat Wave Flash Drought (HWFD) (plus connu du grand public sous le nom d'« effet sèche-cheveux » ou de sécheresse éclair) se mette en place sur une superficie immense (carte 1). L'association d'une chaleur extrême, d'un air exceptionnellement sec et d'un vent soutenu provoque une accélération brutale de l'évapotranspiration et du dessèchement de la végétation. Les conséquences peuvent être très rapides : pertes foliaires massives, mortalité de jeunes plants particulièrement sensibles, stress sévère pour la faune et l'élevage, et risque d'incendie atteignant des niveaux extrêmes à très extrêmes (carte 2). L'ampleur des valeurs envisagées pour l'ouest de la France est difficile à appréhender. Voir de telles conditions s'étendre jusqu'à la Bretagne est tout simplement stupéfiant. Il devient très probable que la végétation du Centre-Ouest de la France subisse une conjonction rarissime de facteurs physiques conduisant à une HWFD (Heat Wave Flash Drought), plus communément appelée « sécheresse éclair » ou « effet sèche-cheveux » : des températures dépassant 42°C, une humidité relative inférieure à 20 % et des vents supérieurs à 30 km/h. Cette combinaison extrême accélère brutalement l'évapotranspiration et l'assèchement de la végétation. Les plantes peuvent alors basculer en quelques heures d'un état de stress hydrique modéré à une situation critique, avec des chutes de feuilles massives observables à l'échelle de paysages entiers, parfois sur des dizaines de milliers de kilomètres carrés. Dans ces conditions, l'irrigation apporte souvent peu de bénéfices immédiats : le problème n'est plus seulement le manque d'eau dans le sol, mais un stress thermique d'une intensité exceptionnelle. En France, le principal cas documenté de ce phénomène reste celui du 28 juin 2019, lorsque des millions de plantes et d'arbres ont perdu une partie de leur feuillage en quelques heures seulement sous l'effet de températures extrêmes, d'un air très sec et d'un vent desséchant. C'est d'ailleurs le seul cas aussi extrême documenté au monde. Il est essentiel de documenter ce qui pourrait constituer un nouveau cas majeur en France. Si vous le pouvez, photographiez chaque jour votre jardin, un arbre, une haie ou un paysage végétalisé depuis exactement le même point de vue, à partir d'aujourd'hui et pendant les dix prochains jours. Ces observations pourraient constituer un témoignage précieux de la vitesse à laquelle la végétation réagit à un événement climatique d'une telle intensité.
