Authority issued by corrupt, bloated institutions no longer commands automatic respect. We are entering an era in which trust must be earned, not assumed. Credentials matter less than results. Expertise can become conformity wrapped in a credential; status is no substitute for trustworthiness. The future belongs to those with proven track records, not merely letters after their names. Friedrich Nietzsche warned of this more than a century ago. He distrusted experts who served the spirit of their age—those who mistook consensus for courage and conformity for principle. To Nietzsche, many authorities were functionaries of the status quo: too timid to challenge the sacred assumptions of their time. University professors, state philosophers, and moral enforcers wore obedience as a badge of honor. They did not think; they repeated. They did not challenge; they conformed. They made the ordinary seem profound through jargon, complexity, and ambiguity. Nietzsche saw these not as signs of insight, but as camouflage—cowardice in disguise. He also distinguished knowledge from wisdom. Knowledge can be taught, measured, and tested. Wisdom must be earned through suffering, struggle, and brutal self-examination. Nietzsche admired those who forged their own paths rather than simply climbing institutional ladders. Even in science, he saw a danger. He respected its methods but feared their sanctification. Science, he argued, still required justification; materialists confused method with meaning and data with truth. New York elected Zohran Mamdani, who says there should be no billionaires and backs rent freezes, state-run grocery stores, free CUNY, and higher taxes. Polling shows strong support for socialism and communism among Americans under 30. The core error is believing resources can be taken from creators and transferred without losing the knowledge that made them productive. Mao’s China illustrates the outcome: land reform dispossessed and killed landowners, production collapsed as local expertise was treated as an enemy, and grain seizures during the Great Leap Forward worsened a catastrophic famine. The lesson: destroying incentives, property rights, and local knowledge destroys production itself. Envy is often disguised as justice. Communist regimes cultivated resentment and turned grievance into political energy, making societies less focused on creating wealth and more focused on making others lose it. Even when central planners tried to subordinate families to the state, people preserved knowledge through markets, private plots, and community practice. Das nach dem liberalen österreichischen Ökonomen und Staatsphilosophen Ludwig von Mises benannte Institut darf seine jährlichen Konferenzen künftig nicht mehr im «Bayerischen Hof» in München abhalten. Das Management des Fünf-Sterne-Luxushotels begründete in der vergangenen Woche seine Entscheidung damit, dass die öffentlichen Äusserungen von Vertretern des Mises-Instituts nicht mit den Werten der «Weltoffenheit, Toleranz, Vielfalt sowie den Grundwerten einer freiheitlichen und demokratischen Gesellschaft» vereinbar seien, für die der «Bayerische Hof» stehe. Hintergrund der Entscheidung des Hotels war ein Bericht des Münchner Lokalblatts «Abendzeitung». Darin wirft die Zeitung dem Institut vor, unter dem Deckmantel wissenschaftlicher Expertise den Staat und die Demokratie infrage zu stellen. Mit dieser Haltung weise das Mises-Institut, das bis vor wenigen Jahren von dem 2021 verstorbenen Milliardär August von Finck junior finanziert wurde, eine gefährliche Nähe zur AfD und zum Rechtsextremismus auf. Staatskritische Denkschule Um dem Vorwurf der Rechtslastigkeit des Mises-Instituts Gravitas zu verleihen, zitiert das Abendblatt Kronzeugen aus dem linken politischen Spektrum, die für ihre antikapitalistische Haltung hinlänglich bekannt sind. Darunter der für die linke Kampagnen-Organisation Campact arbeitende Soziologe Andreas Kemper und der kanadische Historiker Quinn Slobodian. Das legt die Vermutung nahe, dass hinter der medialen Attacke gegen das Mises-Institut der Versuch steht, die Marktwirtschaft und den Kapitalismus, für die Liberale und Libertäre eintreten, gesellschaftlich zu desavouieren. Solcherlei Vorwürfe sind nicht neu. Seit Jahren schon versuchen Vertreter aus dem linken politischen Spektrum der liberalen Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Gesellschaft eine Nähe zu rechtslastigem Gedankengut nachzuweisen. Ludwig von Mises und dessen Schüler Friedrich August von Hayek waren bedeutende Vertreter der österreichischen Schule der Nationalökonomie. Es handelt sich dabei um eine staatskritische liberale Denkschule, die im 19. Jahrhundert von Carl Menger begründet wurde. Mises plädiert in seinen Werken für einen Minimalstaat, der sich darauf beschränkt, das Eigentum und die Freiheit der Bürger sowie den Frieden zu schützen. Er wandte sich scharf gegen staatliche Eingriffe in die Wirtschaft.
