This is chilling but not surprising — the UN is right to warn that deliberate attacks on energy and water systems risk a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe. Targeting civilian infrastructure is a war crime, and we need far more than words: immediate, scaled-up humanitarian aid, winter kits, safe shelter, and funding to repair and decentralize power so communities can survive while under attack. Progressive values demand solidarity with Ukrainian civilians and refugees, accountability for those who ordered these strikes, and a diplomatic push toward a ceasefire — but that cannot mean abandoning Ukraine’s right to defend itself. Wealthy states must step up now with emergency assistance, sustained financing for resilient green energy in Ukraine, and support for neighboring countries sheltering displaced people. We can’t let geopolitics excuse inaction when lives and basic human dignity are on the line.
