Petteri Vaara criticized the government's decision to grant a 150 million euro tax support to Anglo American's subsidiary, Sakati, through Business Finland. According to him, the value of the metal deposits located in Viiankiaapa in Sodankylä, a Natura 2000 area, was tens of billions of euros: about 15 billion euros for copper and over ten billion euros for nickel, gold, and palladium. Vaara believed that the mining company would receive the extracted metals and the vast majority of the economic benefits, while the risks of the project would remain with nature and taxpayers. Vaara wrote that the state was preparing and partly funding mining projects but handed the responsibility for leading them to multinational companies. He also criticized the National Coalition Party member of parliament, Pia Kauma, who stated that protected nature calmed and comforted people, but metals were needed for batteries and electrical cables. Vaara mentioned that Sakati had met with several ministers, their assistants, and members of parliament and had used consultants from the law firm Borenius. Vaara claimed that 79 percent of Finns opposed mining in nature conservation areas. According to him, the government was pushing for the project to gain the status of an EU strategic raw materials initiative to expedite the permitting process. He also criticized Anglo American's plans to purchase old-growth forests in Inari and to restore drained wetlands to replace Viiankiaapa. Vaara referred to a statement from the Permit and Supervision Agency, which indicated that the actions proposed by the company were insufficient to mitigate the environmental harm of the project as required by the nature directive. https://t.co/spQ6nEoAhG #Suomi #Luonto #Kaivosteollisuus (translated)
Joakim Vigelius estimated that lowering the distribution obligation as early as spring would have reflected in fuel prices and that the state's revenue side would not have deteriorated at the same time. According to the post, Anttonen had warned that ST1's biodiesel refinery under construction in Gothenburg was the company's best investment ever, although he argued that it had no climate benefits. He also stated that the distribution obligation would increase the use of biofuels and criticized the timelines of Finland and Sweden for implementing biofuel obligations. https://t.co/UBnNOxjCJI #biodiesel #ilmastotavoitteet #biopolttoaineet (translated)

Henri Vanhanen criticized Donald Trump's actions in the Ukraine war, noting that he declared agreements about which there was uncertainty, while pressuring Ukraine in a way that benefited Vladimir Putin. As a recent example, Vanhanen pointed to Trump’s announced energy ceasefire. According to him, Volodymyr Zelensky heard about it practically for the first time from the media, Russia had not confirmed the agreement, and continued, according to Zelensky, attacks on Ukraine's power plants. Vanhanen asked what kind of ceasefire it was if the other party did not know what had been agreed upon. He suggested that Zelensky had to be cautious of Trump’s criticism to avoid being blamed for obstructing peace. Vanhanen referred to the Financial Times reporting that the United States threatened to cut off arms and intelligence supplies to Ukraine unless the country stopped attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. He also wrote that Trump agreed to buy Russian diesel, demanded Ukraine to cease attacks on Russian oil refineries, and encouraged a change of leadership in Ukraine. Vanhanen estimated that the war in Iran and the resulting fuel prices, the upcoming midterm elections, and the need to show results might explain Trump’s urgency to secure an agreement. According to him, Trump aimed for cheaper diesel and a visible peace political achievement, while Putin would benefit from a decrease in attacks on Russia’s energy sector. Vanhanen noted that the alignment of these goals seemed to occur at Ukraine’s expense. Vanhanen stated that he did not oppose a ceasefire if it protected Ukrainians and also bound Russia. However, he observed that for Trump, merely declaring an agreement seemed to suffice, even without information about its terms or Russia's commitment. Vanhanen assessed that Russia would benefit from a situation in which the United States sought a quick agreement and Ukraine was cautious not to offend Trump. In such conditions, he believed Putin could gain concessions from Trump without Russia needing to win against Ukraine at the negotiating table. #Ukraina #Trump #Venäjä (translated)
Henri Vanhanen wrote that Donald Trump's Russia policy may not have been guided by a coherent strategy. According to him, Trump made decisions one by one, seeking quick political gains, and then had to fix the consequences. In his assessment, Vanhanen linked Trump's diminished commitment to arming Ukraine, the energy price increases resulting from the war in Iran, and the recent diesel trade with Russia. He believed that trade could bolster the Russian economy and give Vladimir Putin a means to pressure Ukraine into halting strikes on Russia's oil refineries. Vanhanen also criticized Trump for condemning strikes that he claimed weakened Russia's war economy. Vanhanen noted that Trump’s administration had not sought significant new funding from Congress for arming Ukraine. According to him, previously agreed deliveries had continued, and European countries had purchased American weapons for Ukraine. He stated that Trump was not fundamentally on the side of Ukraine or Europe but was primarily pursuing his own interests. According to Vanhanen, Finland's security should not be built on the assumption that there is a plan behind Trump's decisions that would turn in favor of Europe. He urged preparedness for the possibility that U.S. aid could be delayed or smaller than expected, to strengthen the availability of defense equipment and air defense, and to deepen cooperation with Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Britain, Poland, and the Baltic countries. He also believed that Europe should be able to support Ukraine and maintain economic pressure on Russia by its own means. #Trump #Venäjä #Ukraina (translated)
Juho Salo criticized Finland's pension system and wrote that if the retirement age were to be raised, it could, in his opinion, be increased all at once to 100 years. He argued that in the system, a worker could pay pension contributions for 50 years, which would correspond to 25 percent of their salary, and receive a pension only at the age of 74. Salo pointed out that, according to him, pension accrual could not be collected. Salo called the system an economic catastrophe. He calculated the total amount of pension contributions and other shares to be 33.7 billion euros: 28.2 billion for occupational pensions, 0.7 billion for employees' shares, and 4.8 billion euros for state contributions. According to him, this amount could be used to pay a monthly basic income of 656 euros in addition to current social benefits and wages without tax increases. He compared the current system to a model where the retirement age would be 50 years and the pension would be 900–1,100 euros per month. Salo believed that money available earlier could be invested by individuals. He also criticized that those born before 1964 would receive the promised pension, while later generations would be left with the bill. Salo proposed that an investment of about 800 euros per month for 25 years would accumulate 240,000 euros without returns and over a million euros with investment returns. He related his comparison to the MSCI World index for the years 2001-2026 and said that wealth would remain for inheritance if 3-4 percent was withdrawn annually. According to him, such a system could make Finnish workers millionaires by the age of 50-60 and free up jobs sooner. Additionally, Salo criticized trade unions for not organizing strikes against pension contributions, development aid, and financing immigration, in his view. He compared the pension system to economic development aid and described it as an even worse solution.

Tänään 14. lento vei kiertoradalle 26 uuden sukupolven Starlink V3 -satelliittia. Starship otti siis tärkeän askeleen koelennoista kohti kaupallista käyttöä. Uusien satelliittien suorituskyky on hurja: yhden V3-satelliitin tiedonsiirtokapasiteetti käyttäjien suuntaan on noin terabitti sekunnissa eli noin kymmenkertainen V2-sukupolveen verrattuna. Tänään laukaistu erä tuo siten verkkoon noin 26 terabittiä sekunnissa lisää kapasiteettia. Täysin ongelmitta lento ei sujunut. Yksi Starshipin moottoreista sammui odotettua aiemmin, ja lento päätettiin suunniteltua lyhyempänä. Kiertorata saavutettiin, satelliitit vapautettiin ja alus palasi hallitusti ja suunnitellusti Tyyneenmereen. Päivämäärässä on hienoa symboliikkaa: SpaceX:n ensimmäinen raketti Falcon 1 saavutti kiertoradan 28.9.2008. Tasan 18 vuotta myöhemmin Starship teki saman. #SpaceX #Starship #avaruus
Kyse on lähes yksinomaan viihteestä.
