Great to see thousand of students protesting outside the Dáil, demanding abolition of college fees, affordable student accommodation & proper funding for 3rd level. It makes no sense for government to put financial obstacles in the way of higher & further education. F**k fees! https://t.co/pqQEXJRKW0 #StudentProtests #HigherEducation #AbolishFees #IE
The justifications for blocking the high schools seem doubtful to me. Looking a bit at the videos of the demands: ▫️"We are 25 or 30 per class" Well... that's not a lot, 25 or 30, in middle school and high school, we were between 35 and 40 every year... ▫️"The facilities are unsanitary" Well, that's often a reality, but a few minutes on TikTok are enough to understand that it's partly due to repeated damage by the students. ▫️"The class hours from 8 AM to 6 PM are too long" It's always been like that and we already have a lot of vacations; it's either one or the other. ▫️The cost and quality of the cafeteria: they are right about this, but with such a low cost relative to the real price and inflation, it's a logical consequence. ▫️Parcoursup and the future: this is the fault of the system that wants to give the Bac to everyone, even though there are no more job prospects. The problem is not Parcoursup but the too large number of high school students. ▫️"We are not replacing teachers" Given the working conditions, it’s not surprising. Overall, it only takes 5 minutes to watch the hundreds of videos to understand the issue. 80% of high school students don't care about the above demands; most are there for opportunism. The argument about disparities between suburbs and city centers is real, especially for Paris (the high schools in the center that pretend to support the movement are bold), but once again, the financial means allocated there are greater than for other territories, peri-urban or rural, and there are no riots there. And we can see clearly that this is just a pretext for the riot. We hear "the police are attacking the high school students." Really, I didn't think that by burning the high school entrance and throwing cobblestones at the riot police, they would charge back... All of this promises an explosive year in 2027… (translated)
Letschert in a tight spot! The Jewish and Israeli students in Maastricht are stating it clearly. They are no longer carried away by the dialogue merry-go-round of the D66 Minister of Education, after spending years in her merry-go-round when she led the university. Result: an antisemitic climate and the import of hate rallies. Letschert's reward: the plush of The Hague. Read the letter below. Support these brave students who let their voice, and only their voice, be heard. Who do not bow to the established order and do not allow themselves to be exploited and misled by them. Bravo! To the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, IJAR Maastricht has learned that Minister of Education Rianne Letschert intends to organize a meeting about Jewish students, following the recent developments at Maastricht University. As the representative organization of Jewish and Israeli students at Maastricht University, we have received no formal invitation from the minister or her ministry. Nor have we been informed about the purpose, the mandate, the intended participants, or the measures that may be considered. If the subject concerns the position and experiences of Jewish and Israeli students at Maastricht University, consultations should begin with the organization that represents these students and within the university environment where the relevant events take place. During Ms. Letschert's previous term at Maastricht University, Jewish and Israeli students and their representatives spoke with her and other members of the university administration on numerous occasions. They repeatedly expressed concerns about safety, intimidation, the campus climate, institutional decisions, and the implications of those decisions for Jewish and Israeli students. From those discussions, it appeared that consultations were taking place, but in our experience, they did not lead to measures that corresponded to the issues raised. Clear lines of accountability were also not established for what followed. This history means that the mere fact that there is again a meeting cannot be considered an achievement in itself. Other Jewish organizations and individuals elsewhere in the Netherlands may have legitimate perspectives on broader issues concerning Jewish life, antisemitism, or national policy. However, they do not represent the Jewish and Israeli students at Maastricht University and cannot replace the representative organization of the students whose campus, lecture halls, and daily living environment are directly at stake. A meeting held elsewhere, with discussion partners who do not represent these students, can be viewed as discussions with Jewish organizations, but cannot reasonably be presented as a consultation with the representative organization of Jewish and Israeli students studying at Maastricht University. For that reason, we believe that if the minister wishes to address what is happening at Maastricht University, she should come to Maastricht and engage directly in conversation with the representative organization of Jewish and Israeli students here. The location is important, as responsibility must be aligned with where the issue occurs and not be disconnected from it: the issues being discussed involve this university, the decisions being made here, and the students who experience the consequences of those decisions. Thus, consultations regarding Maastricht should take place in Maastricht and begin with those who are institutionally responsible for representing the involved students. Before such a meeting takes place, we also demand clarity about what the minister aims to achieve with it. We expect to know what questions are being investigated, what decisions or measures remain open, what responsibility the ministry will take on itself, what responsibility it expects from Maastricht University, what concrete follow-up steps are foreseen, and how the outcomes of the meeting will be recorded and communicated. Without that information, participation threatens to serve mainly as proof that consultations have taken place, rather than as a means by which those consultations can actually have an impact. Our concern, therefore, is not about whether there will be a meeting, but about the relationship between consultation and responsibility. We have previously participated in discussions, we have laid out the problems before, and our presence has previously shown that a dialogue existed. What too often has remained unclear, however, is who was responsible for acting on what was raised during those discussions and what actually changed as a result of those discussions. A representative consultation should not end once the participants leave the room, but should record who is responsible for the issues raised, what actions follow from that, and how those actions will be assessed. We remain willing to engage seriously with the minister in Maastricht. However, that consultation must take place with the representative organization of the Jewish and Israeli students whose situation is at stake, with a clear purpose, with well-defined responsibilities, and with an explicit connection between listening and acting. Anything less than that threatens only to reproduce the form of consultation, while the substance — and the responsibility for it — remains unresolved. Let's not be afraid of words. We have been raising generations of dependents for quite some time. Free school, free university, subsidized canteen, subsidized sports, subsidized summer camps... All of this comes from good intentions. Every child has the right to a chance regardless of their background. What our society has forgotten is that these rights also come with responsibilities, even for kids. The responsibility to do their best in class, to respect their teachers and their environment. And free education was not previously guaranteed until 28 years old like today. If you weren't good enough, free education stopped at 13. No repetition of grades, trivial middle school diploma, sieve-like baccalaureate, universities with mediocre standards. How can we be surprised that kids don't respect an education system that doesn't respect itself? What is happening now is what happens with all the pampered children to whom no limits are set. A generation of child-kings. (translated)

Unpopular opinion: the solution for our school is to go back to a system before the unified college. It makes no sense to push these young people who have no interest in studying all the way to the baccalaureate. It's a waste of time and resources for everyone. And it creates bitterness once the inevitable failure arrives. We need to stop and professionalize much earlier. But for that, we must accept that not everyone should be thrown into the same pot of mediocrity. However, in France, we love that. (translated)
ℹ️ I invite you. We are supposed to be manipulated. The propaganda is eager to "show" that the Gaza Strip is largely destroyed. What no one fundamentally disputes. Of course it is. It's war. A war that the Palestinians started. Not just Hamas. The Jihad in Palestine (PIJ), PFLP, civilians, an entire society that wants to destroy Israel. The manipulation goes beyond that. It is supposed to suggest that the IDF, optionally also Netanyahu or Israel, have indiscriminately bombed the defenseless Gaza Strip. Because that suggests that there is indeed genocide. Just debunking the myth of indiscriminate destruction, as I did yesterday, causes a new shitstorm. Because destroyed is simply destroyed. But the fact that there is a big difference in where, when, how, and what was destroyed is ignored. The areas shown are those that are particularly destroyed. Especially Rafah, which is in Israeli hands, and where tunnels and structurally unsafe houses have already been blown up, where explosives and mines have been deliberately detonated, and where rubble has been piled up. That entire city centers are intact, like in Nuseirat, Maghazi, Burij, Deir al-Balah, and even entire neighborhoods and streets in Khan Yunis, is argued as selective. Although this is merely the same selection, the same "cherry picking" that is used to "prove" total destruction. It shows that some areas are more destroyed than others. Which means there were combat scenarios or at least a specific reason for the destruction. And even if one repeatedly points out that the most recent aerial images have been shown, this is questioned. Because what cannot be must not be. The flood of images of destruction and corpses has long implanted other images in people’s heads. I invite you to a small excursion into the Gaza Strip. Into the "open-air prison," into genocide. Moment loufoque après le match, alors que j’ai demandé à Chris Kreider si Juraj Slafkovsky lui rappelait un « jeune Chris Kreider ». « Absolument pas!
