Gotovo svaka kultura ima modernizovana izdanja starijih autora, uz rasprave o pravopisu, rečniku, uredničkim beleškama i prilagođavanju savremenom čitaocu. Jedan antikvar mi je jednom rekao da „patina vremena daje vrednost“ i može da napravi razliku između originala i jeftine kopije. Otvaram „Nedeljne eseje“ Constantina Noice, dolazim do predgovora izdavača u izdanju Humanitasa iz 1992. godine i saznajem da je „pravopis ažuriran“. Čitanje Noice moglo je biti šetnja kroz tridesete i četrdesete godine 20. veka. Umesto toga, tom epohom šetamo s modernim naočarima, udobno smešteni u Uberu, bez straha da ćemo se izgubiti — odnosno da nećemo razumeti reči tog vremena, koje su jednostavno mogle biti „prevedene“ u fusnotama. Šta bi bilo kada bismo uzeli i novine iz tog vremena pa ih „ažurirali“? A možda bismo mogli da uradimo i rebranding tadašnjih reklama, kako ne bismo previše opterećivali svoje neurone, kao da smo u escape roomu. Zašto stati tu? Mogli bismo da ažuriramo i udžbenike istorije i napišemo da je Arhimeda iz Sirakuze ubio rimski vojnik dok je radio matematiku na svom tabletu. Osnovna ideja ostaje ista, zar ne? Samo epoha nestaje. I još nešto: zašto matematičari ne „ažuriraju“ Pitagoru? Mogu da promene oznake. Mogu drugačije da objasne dokaz. Mogu čak i da naprave crtež online, pomoću animacije koja nastaje pred očima učenika. Ali Pitagorina teorema ostaje Pitagorina teorema. Pa kada čitamo starijeg autora, zašto ne bismo sačuvali i jezik njegovog vremena — a savremena objašnjenja stavili u fusnote?
