Er valt stilaan niets meer te verbloemen. De EU gedraagt zich als de vijand van de Europese welvaart. En de gasfactuur is het zoveelste bewijs van hoe diep die schade inmiddels snijdt. Europa had precies wat een economisch machtsblok nodig heeft: betaalbare energie, een sterke industriële basis, hoogproductieve landbouw, kennis, kapitaal en een enorme interne markt. In plaats van die fundamenten te beschermen, heeft de EU beleid opgetuigd dat ze één voor één verzwakt. Goedkope energie werd ingeruild voor dure afhankelijkheid. Industrie wordt overladen met energiekosten, klimaatlasten en regelgeving terwijl Amerikaanse en Aziatische concurrenten rustig marktaandeel overnemen. Landbouw wordt behandeld alsof voedselproductie een hinderlijke activiteit is. Gezinnen krijgen de gevolgen uiteindelijk rechtstreeks doorgerekend in energie, wonen, vervoer en dagelijkse boodschappen. En nu opnieuw die gasfactuur. Geen abstract debat in Brussel. Geen theoretisch model. Gewoon keiharde euro’s die uit de rekening van Europese gezinnen verdwijnen als gevolg van politieke keuzes. Het wordt daarom grotesk om dit allemaal nog te verkopen als bescherming van Europa. Een instituut dat zijn eigen energiepositie verzwakt, zijn industrie een concurrentienadeel bezorgt, zijn landbouw wurgt en zijn bevolking steeds meer laat betalen voor de gevolgen daarvan, hoeft niet verbaasd te zijn wanneer mensen uiteindelijk tot een vernietigende conclusie komen: Europa heeft vijanden buiten zijn grenzen.
