Nigeria – how pro-Russian influence networks sell military rule as the answer When Nigerians took to the streets in August 2024 to protest soaring living costs and frustration with government, some demonstrations acquired an unexpected symbol: the Russian flag. In Kano, Kaduna and other northern cities, protesters were filmed carrying Russian colours and calling for Moscow’s intervention. Some demanded a military takeover. What initially looked like an unusual expression of anger has since become part of a much larger picture. A September 2026 assessment by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies describes Nigeria as a major target of overlapping foreign information operations, with Russia the most active external actor in its information space. The report does not identify a single centrally controlled campaign. Instead, it maps an ecosystem in which genuine dissatisfaction over insecurity, corruption and living standards is repeatedly redirected towards a broader proposition: democratic government has failed, while the military-led regimes of the Sahel offer a more effective alternative. Turning a real protest into a pro-Russian message The clearest example emerged during the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests. Nigerian investigative reporting found that a Kano-based TikTok influencer with more than 100,000 followers had been paid through a Telegram channel associated with African Initiative, a Moscow-based media operation linked by researchers to Russian influence activity in Africa. The influencer said the channel supplied photographs, videos and talking points for redistribution on TikTok and Instagram. Among the messages provided were phrases such as “Putin please come and save Nigeria” and “The army is the answer for Nigeria”. Influencers were encouraged to use Hausa-language hashtags including #Zangazanga – “protest” – alongside references to Putin and Russia. Investigators identified 38 accounts circulating similar pro-Russian and pro-military narratives during the demonstrations. Russian flags subsequently appeared among protesters in several northern cities. This does not mean the protests themselves were created by Russia. They were driven by genuine economic and political grievances, and Nigerian protesters gave different reasons for carrying Russian flags. The important feature of the influence activity was precisely that it did not need to manufacture the original anger. It could attach a geopolitical message to an existing domestic crisis. From frustration to the idea of military government The narrative fits a wider pattern seen across West Africa. Russia has developed close relations with the military governments of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, while pro-Russian media ecosystems routinely portray those states as examples of sovereignty, stability and resistance to Western influence. Nigeria, by contrast, has remained under constitutional civilian government since 1999. Africa Center researchers say information networks targeting Nigerians increasingly contrast these two models. Recurring messages depict elections as wasteful or predetermined, civilian institutions as incapable of protecting citizens and military governments as more decisive on security and development. Some content portrays the Sahelian juntas as delivering better roads, lower prices and stronger security even where available evidence points to continuing or worsening instability. Language is central to the strategy. Hausa is spoken across northern Nigeria and neighbouring Niger, allowing political narratives to travel across borders that are far less important online than they are on maps. HumAngle documented efforts involving Nigerien state-linked actors to cultivate Hausa-speaking journalists and distribute material favourable to Niger’s junta and hostile to France and Western influence. The Russian and Sahelian-junta information ecosystems are not identical, but their narratives frequently reinforce one another. Fake journalists inside real Nigerian media The campaign environment extends beyond social media. A 2026 investigation by Graphika and Code for Africa identified 44 ghost reporters and fake experts whose identities were used to place Russia-aligned narratives in African media. Thirty-eight were assessed with high confidence to be fabricated. Their articles or quotations appeared across 138 websites and were amplified by at least 113 Facebook accounts and Pages. Nigeria was one of the most heavily targeted countries. According to the Africa Center’s analysis of the research, Daily Post Nigeria carried 39 articles involving 14 identified ghost authors. Once published by a genuine Nigerian outlet, such material could then be cited by other websites, social-media accounts or even Russian official channels as though it had originated independently in Africa. This is information laundering rather than simple propaganda: the most valuable asset being borrowed is the credibility of the local newsroom. Generative AI added another layer. OpenAI and Meta separately disrupted a Russia-origin network that produced Africa-focused political content and operated Facebook Pages posing as local media organisations. One fabricated commentator, “Dr Manuel Godsin”, was presented as a European-trained geopolitical expert although investigators found no evidence supporting his academic biography. ChatGPT had been used to generate articles under the persona’s name, while Meta removed 37 Facebook accounts and 29 Pages connected to the broader network. Different networks, similar strategic direction It would be misleading to merge all these activities into a single Russian command structure. The African Initiative-linked influencer campaign, the ghost-reporter network and the AI-enabled operation disrupted by OpenAI and Meta were uncovered separately and used different infrastructure. Public evidence does not demonstrate that every actor reported to the same organisation. What connects them is a recurring set of themes and methods: portraying Western partnerships as exploitative, presenting Russia as an alternative security partner, amplifying failures of civilian government, and giving military-led rule greater legitimacy. Investigative reporting on leaked Russian documents has meanwhile described a much wider influence apparatus operating across Africa, involving political consultants, paid journalists, influencers and locally tailored campaigns intended to reduce Western influence and expand Moscow’s position. The underlying technique is less about inventing dissatisfaction than redirecting it. Nigeria faces real security threats, economic pressure and public frustration. Influence operators do not need to persuade Nigerians that those problems exist. They need only influence the explanation for why they exist – and which political model appears to offer the answer. That is what makes the Nigerian case significant. The most effective propaganda does not necessarily introduce a completely false reality. It takes a real crisis and changes where the audience is encouraged to look for the solution. COLUMN: HET POLITIEKE STOCKHOLMSYNDROOM Max von Kreyfelt De Nederlandse burger wordt al jaren gegijzeld en verdedigt inmiddels zijn bewakers. Dat is het politieke stockholmsyndroom: hoe harder de overheid knijpt, hoe dankbaarder een deel van de bevolking reageert wanneer zij even loslaat. De belasting gaat omhoog, maar gelukkig minder dan aangekondigd. De energierekening explodeert, maar er komt misschien compensatie. De woningmarkt stort vast, maar de minister belooft een loket. Iedere klap wordt gevolgd door een folder over hulp. De gijzelnemer heet daarom geen gijzelnemer, maar overheid. Het losgeld heet belasting. De bewaking heet veiligheid en het dagelijkse dreigement wordt gebracht door een deskundige die bij de publieke omroep uitlegt dat strengere maatregelen helaas onvermijdelijk zijn. Veel burgers knikken. De overheid zal het wel weten. Wanneer een ministerie miljarden verspilt, verdedigen zij de goede bedoelingen. Wanneer een uitvoeringsdienst mensen vermorzelt, wijzen zij op de ingewikkelde regelgeving. Wanneer documenten verdwijnen, herinneren zij eraan dat bestuurders ook maar mensen zijn. De burger toont meer begrip voor de macht dan de macht ooit voor de burger heeft getoond. Dat is geen vertrouwen meer. Het is emotionele afhankelijkheid. Men vreest dat zonder de vertrouwde partijen chaos uitbreekt, alsof die chaos niet juist onder hun toezicht is ontstaan. De huizen zijn onbetaalbaar, de zorg loopt vast, het onderwijs zakt weg en de overheid kan haar eigen ICT niet openen zonder drie consultants en een noodkrediet. Toch wordt iedere buitenstaander te riskant genoemd. De cipier heeft tenminste bestuurlijke ervaring. De media onderhouden deze merkwaardige verkering. Iedere avond verschijnt dezelfde kring van politici, oud-politici en beleidsvriendelijke duiders om te vertellen dat het systeem onder druk staat door de mensen die er kritiek op hebben. Nooit door degenen die het besturen. De brandweercommandant staat rokend naast het uitgebrande huis en waarschuwt voor burgers met lucifers. Wie zegt dat de overheid is gegijzeld door partijen, adviesclubs, lobbyisten en gesubsidieerde belangenorganisaties, krijgt te horen dat hij het vertrouwen in de instituties ondermijnt. Alsof vertrouwen een nationale plicht is en geen resultaat van behoorlijk gedrag. Het politieke stockholmsyndroom eindigt zodra de burger ophoudt dankbaar te zijn voor kruimels van zijn eigen brood. Zodra hij beseft dat publieke diensten geen gunsten zijn, ministers geen voogden en belastinggeld geen particulier bezit van de staat. De overheid hoeft niet te worden vernietigd. Zij moet worden bevrijd uit handen van degenen die haar gebruiken als banenmachine, pinautomaat en morele kansel. De eerste stap is eenvoudig: stop met medelijden hebben met de gijzelnemer. De Vlaamse regering gelooft echt dat "een culinair centrum" van 38 miljoen euro belastinggeld hét middel is voor "een toekomst" en "economische groei voor duizenden café-bazen, frituristen en andere horeca uitbaters". Dat wordt dan gestaafd met gebakken-lucht studies van dure consultants en belangenverenigingen. En als klap op de vuurpijl wordt de peperdure communicatie verzorgd door ... LDV United. Die van de podcast van 800.000 euro. We hebben het dikwijls over een overheid die zijn prioriteiten niet kent. Maar het zijn in de eerste plaats helaas politici en vooral ministers die geen flauw benul meer hebben van kerntaken. Bij dit cullinaire centrum hoor je dezelfde van de pot gerukte redenering waarmee Sven Gatz eerder miljoenen belastinggeld verspilde in zijn persoonlijke Brussels biermuseum. De tol is desastreus: slechtste begroting. Torenhoge schuldstijging. Ondernemers die massaal wegtrekken. Geen economische meer. Column: De beschaafde liquidatie Max von Kreyfelt Pim Fortuyn werd op 6 mei 2002 vermoord door Volkert van der Graaf. Voor een politieke opdrachtgever is nooit bewijs gevonden. Den Haag ontdekte daarna dat een politieke opstand ook zonder kogels kan worden geliquideerd. Dat oogt democratischer en scheelt complottheorieën. In 2026 richt een liquidatieproject op. Project 2029 lijkt precies voor dat doel uit de Haagse kraamkamer te zijn getrokken. Het moet niet links bestrijden, Nederland bevrijden of de macht van Brussel breken. Het moet voorkomen dat de electorale opmars van FVD uitgroeit tot werkelijke politieke macht. Daarvoor wordt Mona Keijzer uit de bestuurlijke vitrinekast gehaald. Zij moet de frisse buitenstaander spelen, hoewel ze al zo lang deel uitmaakt van het politieke meubilair. Keijzer belooft een nieuw rechts geluid. Dat is vertederend. Het CDA heeft kennelijk besloten zichzelf opnieuw uit te vinden door een voormalige CDA’er een andere verpakking te geven. Een beetje BBB-groen op het doosje, een flinke foto van Mona erop en klaar is de revolutie. Rond Project 2029 ruikt alles naar dezelfde vertrouwde politieke kringloop. Oude bestuurders noemen zichzelf vernieuwers, partijmedewerkers veranderen in onafhankelijke denkers en mensen die jarenlang hielpen het systeem te onderhouden komen nu uitleggen hoe dapper zij het gaan bestrijden. De pyromaan presenteert zich als brandpreventie-expert. Wierd Duk, de integriteit-makelaar, mag ondertussen de komst van de nieuwe verlosser aankondigen. Keijzer zou tientallen zetels kunnen halen. Natuurlijk. In Den Haag worden verkiezingsuitslagen alvast geschreven voordat de kiezer heeft begrepen dat hij ergens enthousiast over moet zijn. Het mechanisme is eenvoudig. FVD groeit, dus verschijnt er een keurige opvangbak voor kiezers die verandering willen, maar door de media geleerd hebben dat Forum eng is. Project 2029 mag dezelfde onderwerpen benoemen en dezelfde zorgen herkennen, zolang iedere wezenlijke breuk uitblijft. De toon wordt rebels, de uitkomst betrouwbaar. Dat is de moderne politieke liquidatie. Geen bloed op het asfalt, maar stemmen in een opvangreservoir. Geen moordwapen, maar een mediacampagne. Geen dader die wordt afgevoerd, maar consultants die elkaar na afloop feliciteren met de geslaagde verbreding van rechts. FVD hoeft niet verboden of verslagen te worden. Het hoeft slechts klein genoeg te blijven. Beproefd bij de alternatieve media. Daarvoor verdeel je de kiezer over steeds nieuwe partijen, waarna dezelfde bestuurlijke klasse hoofdschuddend vaststelt dat rechts zo hopeloos versnipperd is. Wat een succesvol NCTV beleid. Project 2029 is daarom geen bedreiging voor het bestel. Het is het afweersysteem van dat bestel. Le hack de la DGFiP, c’est l’arbre qui cache la forêt. Je pense que vous ne vous rendez pas compte de l’incompétence de certains personnels dans le public qui ont accès à des systèmes critiques et qui les développent depuis 20 ans, en gagnant des marchés par connivence, où l’on place des consultants à peine sortis d’école, voire encore en stage. J’en ai parlé souvent à des gens du gouvernement : comment est-ce que des cabinets de conseil vampirisent l’État à coups de missions à rallonge. Certains essaient de contrebalancer ça par des appels d’offres à rallonge, pour montrer qu’ils font les choses bien avec une supposé mise en concurrence mais c’est du vent car au final, seuls ces mêmes cabinets ont les codes. J’ai répondu deux fois à des appels d’offres publics en étant dans un gros cabinet, et les dossiers sont juste absolument WTF et a rallonge. On a du mobiliser 5 consultant pendant 2 semaines pour preparer le dossier , et il y avait des deliberations a rallonge. Et du coup je n’y ai jamais répondu avec mes startups ou en indépendant, parce que les demandes sont juste lunaires pour les pré-qualification. Il n’y a qu’une seule solution : virer ceux qui sont aux mêmes postes depuis 20 ans, refondre le processus d’achat pour l’adapter à 2026, hausser les salaires des gens en interne pour élever (vraiment) le niveau, réduire la dépendance à l’externe et arrêter le copinage. Pendant que la Gironde brûle, pendant que des dizaines de milliers de Français sont évacués, pendant que les pompiers s’épuisent ce sont nos agriculteurs qu’on a passé à la moulinette toute l’année qui se mettent en route avec leurs citernes, avec leurs tracteurs, avec leur eau, avec leur dignité. Oui, les mêmes qu’on a traités de pollueurs. Les mêmes qu’on a noyés sous les normes européennes, les contrôles, les interdictions d’épandage, les taxes carbone, les factures d’électricité qui explosent. Les mêmes à qui on a dit « vous êtes trop nombreux », « vous devez disparaître », « le modèle est dépassé ». Et c’est eux qui partent. Pas les ministres.Pas les hauts fonctionnaires. Pas les consultants bien payés. C’est eux. L’agriculteur qui galère à payer ses factures. Celui qui se couche à 23h et se lève à 4h. Celui qui regarde ses comptes et se demande s’il va tenir jusqu’à la prochaine récolte. Celui qui a vu ses revenus fondre pendant que les normes s’empilaient. C’est lui qui remplit sa citerne et prend la direction de Bordeaux. Pendant que l’État regarde ailleurs. Ou pire : pendant que l’État continue de lui coller des paperasses. La France de Macron en 2026, c’est ça : On détruit ceux qui produisent. On les humilie. On les asphyxie. Et quand le feu arrive, on compte sur leur solidarité. On leur a tout pris. Leur liberté d’entreprendre. Leur fierté. Parfois même leur avenir. Et ils donnent encore. Ils donnent leur eau. Ils donnent leur temps. Ils donnent leur force. Aujourd’hui, face à l’ogre de feu qui ravage la Gironde, ce ne sont pas les bureaux parisiens qui sauvent ce qui peut l’être. Ce sont les hommes et les femmes de la terre. Ceux qu’on voulait faire taire. Ceux qu’on voulait faire disparaître. Ils n’attendent pas de médaille. Ils n’attendent pas de discours. Ils n’attendent même plus de reconnaissance de la part de ceux qui les ont trahis. Ils agissent. Parce que c’est dans leur nature. Parce que la France, la vraie, c’est eux. Respect éternel. Respect infini. Respect absolu à nos agriculteurs. À ceux qui, malgré tout, continuent de nourrir le pays et, en plus, de le défendre quand il brûle. Vous êtes la colonne vertébrale de cette nation. Quelle tristesse de voir des anciens coéquipiers de Deschamps comme Micoud ou Dugarry se servir de leur rôle de consultant pour venir régler leurs comptes avec leur ancien capitaine, comme pour se venger d'une frustration vieille de près de 30 ans. Il suffit de lire les commentaires pour voir que les gens ne sont pas dupes et analysent très bien ces avis remplis d'aigreur à l'encontre de Deschamps.
